Bingley was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as ‘Bingheleia’ but was founded around Saxon times. In the 14th century it actually had a recorded population twice the size of neighbouring towns Halifax, Bradford and Leeds, but like many similar-sized towns in the West Riding, it prospered most significantly during the Industrial Revolution.
